What is the Ideal Home?

This week Tidy with Intent will be at the Ideal Home Show’s Expert Advice Hub at Olympia London, giving free 30-minute consultations along with architects, designers, etc. The exhibition has been happening annually since 1908! It is filled with innovative ideas and ways to make things better at home, and you’ll see things that are creative, beautiful, fresh, new, interesting and fun.

But what is the ideal home?

I believe the ideal home is not a “perfect” or “Instagram-worthy” home.

It’s also not a home that’s just an idea — imaginary, always out of reach, inaccessible, a joke.

The ideal home is one that actually exists.

It’s not ideal if it’s not real, just a figment of your imagination.

The ideal home is a pivot point. A place to come and go from.

It’s a safe space to stay,

To be comfortable, warm and dry

To leave belongings/burdens at (literally or figuratively)

To rest.

The ideal home is a place that serves your life, not a place that dictates how you should live, without even asking you.

It’s a place that benefits your health and well-being, and your relationships.

It helps you move on to the next thing.

It doesn’t have to be a place you own, just a place you are allowed to arrive and make a decision at. Maybe just a decision to sit in a chair. Maybe to move a chair; or reupholster a chair.

I love helping others rediscover their sense of agency through a whole-home declutter — starting with what they have before determining what new routines, belongings or renovations will bring them closer to their envisioned ideal life.

Sign up for a 30-minute session with me on Thursday 3 or Friday 4 April at the Ideal Home Show. You’ll need a ticket to enter the exhibition, but all sessions are free. Let’s brainstorm potential solutions for your knotty decluttering/organising dilemmas!
